The basic philosophy embedded within CIGAL is flexibility:

• data variables can be accessed directly from any memory storage device
• data items can be a wide range of data types
• data variables can be of any size
• all or part of any variable can be used for almost any operation
• if hardware isn't available for an operation, software emulates it
• if a predefined command isn't available for an operation, write a macro
