The graphical user interface (GUI) for fScan is organized around “taskbar” menus. Each taskbar is an icon-based menu, with multiple icons grouped together by functionality. The Taskbar window has tabs for all of the taskbar menus currently available. The list of tabs will change depending on which data window is currently active because different functions are appropriate for types of data windows.

To access the functions within each taskbar menu, click on that menu tab to expand it. When you want to hide the tab, click the empty gray space on the tab to the right of the name to collapse it. When you expand a tab that would not fit on the screen fScan will automatically collapse the least recently used tabs as necessary to fit the new menu list.

Within each taskbar menu you can left click an icon to execute its associated command. Most icons also have a command description available, which you can see by right clicking the icon (or by left clicking while holding doen the <Shift> key). A Message window will open with a description of the tool and a command alias.

Each taskbar menu is defined by 3 files, typically found within the MENUS subdirectory in the fScan's system directory. The 3 files include an XML file that defines the commands and help descriptions for every icon and also contains links to the other 2 files. The second file is a JPEG image with all of the taskbar icons arranged in a single vertical column. The third file is a JPEG image of the taskbar tab. Creating a new taskbar simply requires making these 3 new files and then loading them.

fScan has a function for creating and editting taskbar menus, along with a special taskbar GUI to facilitate the process. The File taskbar typically provides icons for starting the taskbar editor. For more information on this, see:
